OPENING DAY

When you’re trying to escape your past, be sure your past is ready to let you go.

Danny Manary was a Florida pool boy, running drinks for the smart set at Miami’s National Hotel. Then he met Roxanne, a stripper and escort who distracted herself by hanging out with local gangster, Tommy Minoloa. Danny and Roxanne together made sparks fly, which didn’t sit well with Tommy, who considered Roxanne a part of his property. Luckily for Tommy, Danny was impatient; he wasn’t content to be a pool boy, he wanted to impress Roxanne, he wanted a piece of the good life. Tommy manipulated that fact to get Danny sent to Apalachicola Correctional and get him as far away from Roxanne as possible.

Six years later, Danny is tending bar in Chicago, at a tavern that sits just a long foul ball from Wrigley Field. He hasn’t seen Roxanne, or Tommy since Florida; until the wintery night that they come walking into his bar.

What brought Danny to Chicago? Why are Tommy and Roxanne there? And what does Tommy find out about Danny’s new life that will bring all their lives crashing back together, on the cold streets of Chicago, on Opening Day?

Opening Day is the first novel by Chicago writer, Ric Hess and is currently being reviewed for publication by various literary agencies.
