DIVERSIONS

On Saturday mornings, from the vantage point of our high sixth floor, we watch the hookers who hustle the corner of May Street and Lake. The ladies who work there stake out their territory with grim determination, they have predictable schedules, we know many of them by name.

Their weary resignation underscores the obvious; these women are not looking for romance. Their ministrations are merely a job for them, one without the usual social conventions, and, of course, without the same conflicting rewards and restrictions. Still, they display an admirable tenacity; regardless of their motivations, they are out there every day. The girls work hard for their money and we salute their entrepreneurial spirit.
